How to fix stick drift

Stick drift is a controller reporting movement when you aren’t touching it. Your character creeps forward, the camera slides, the menu scrolls on its own. It is almost always a hardware fault rather than a software one — but a good share of cases are fixed in two minutes with no tools, so it is worth working through the cheap options before spending money.

Confirm it first. Put the controller down, touch nothing, and run the stick drift test. If the dot moves on its own, that is drift. If it only misbehaves in one game, the problem is that game’s dead-zone setting, not your pad.

What actually causes it

Nearly every analog stick uses a pair of potentiometers — small variable resistors that convert physical movement into a voltage. A wiper drags across a resistive track each time you move the stick. Over thousands of hours that track wears, and the worn spot reports a voltage the controller reads as movement.

Two other causes are far easier to fix: dust and skin oil collecting under the stick housing, which interferes with the same contact, and a bad calibration baseline, where the controller has memorised a resting position that is no longer correct. Those are what the first two steps below address.

Fixes, cheapest first

  1. Clean under the stick

    The most effective free fix, and it resolves a meaningful share of cases. Push the stick to one side to expose the gap around its base. Give it a short burst of compressed air, then put two or three drops of 99% isopropyl alcohol into the gap. Rotate the stick through its full range twenty to thirty times to work the fluid across the contacts, then leave it to dry completely before powering on.

    Do not use WD-40, contact cleaner with lubricant, or anything oily. It attracts dust and makes the problem worse a few weeks later.

  2. Recalibrate, and update the firmware

    This resets the resting baseline the controller compares against. It will not repair a worn track, but it clears drift caused by a bad baseline and is worth ruling out.

    • Nintendo Switch: System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Calibrate Control Sticks. The only console with a proper built-in recalibration.
    • PS5 / DualSense: no user calibration. Update the firmware via Settings → Accessories, then reset the pad with the small button on the back — press it with a pin for five seconds.
    • PS4 / DualShock 4: reset pinhole on the back, same method.
    • Xbox: update through the Xbox Accessories app on console or Windows.

  3. Raise the dead zone as a stopgap

    Not a repair — a way to keep playing. Increasing the dead zone tells the game to ignore small inputs near centre, which hides mild drift at the cost of some precision. Many shooters and driving games expose this in their control settings, and Steam offers it per-controller for PC play.

    If drift is bad enough that a large dead zone is needed, the stick is too far gone and you are better off replacing it.

  4. Check warranty and free-repair programmes before opening it

    Opening the controller voids any coverage, so do this before step 5. Drift has been the subject of enough complaints that some routes to a free fix exist — most notably Nintendo, which has repaired drifting Joy-Cons free of charge in a number of regions regardless of warranty status.

    Sony and Microsoft handle it as standard warranty service, typically one year from purchase. If your pad is newer than that, claim it rather than repair it yourself.

  5. Replace the stick module

    The real repair. Replacement modules are inexpensive, but fitting one means opening the controller and desoldering fourteen pins, then soldering the new module in. It is straightforward if you have soldered before and genuinely difficult if you have not — the pads lift easily and a lifted pad usually ends the board.

    Some newer controllers use a plug-in module instead of a soldered one. Check yours before assuming a soldering iron is required.

  6. Fit hall-effect sticks — the permanent fix

    Hall-effect sticks read position with a magnetic sensor instead of a wiper on a resistive track. Nothing physically touches, so there is no track to wear out. They do not develop drift the way potentiometer sticks do.

    Drop-in hall-effect replacements exist for most popular controllers, and some pads now ship with them from the factory. If you are replacing a stick anyway, this is the version worth fitting — the work is identical and it does not come back.

Two things people try that do not work. There is no app, driver or “drift fix tool” that repairs worn hardware — software can only mask the symptom by widening the dead zone. And blowing hard into the stick housing with your mouth adds moisture, which corrodes contacts. Use canned air.

When a stick can’t be saved

If cleaning and recalibration change nothing and the resting offset is large, the track is worn through and no amount of software will bring it back. At that point it is replace the module, or replace the controller. Retest after every attempt so you know whether you actually improved anything — measuring the resting offset before and after is the only way to tell a real fix from a placebo.

Test again after each step. Run the browser drift test for a quick check, or use the Android app to measure the resting offset, dead zone and rim travel with exact numbers — it also reaches per-motor rumble and other things a browser cannot.

Common questions

Does stick drift get worse over time?

Yes. Track wear is cumulative and does not reverse. Cleaning can buy months by removing debris from the contact area, but a physically worn track keeps degrading with use.

Can a firmware update fix drift?

It can fix drift caused by a bad calibration baseline or a dead-zone bug, which is why it is worth trying. It cannot repair worn hardware.

Is it worth repairing or should I buy a new controller?

If you can solder, a hall-effect module costs a fraction of a new pad and outlasts one. If you cannot, weigh a paid repair against replacement — and if the pad is under a year old, claim the warranty instead of either.

Why does my controller drift only in one game?

Then it probably isn’t drift. That game’s dead zone is set tighter than the others. Confirm with a neutral test: if the stick reads clean at rest there, your hardware is fine.
